Oh yes I know we are already in the 2nd week of Jan and things are getting back into the swing of things
I am going to try my utmost best to keep them short. There are 12 New year resolutions
bullet points (just because ....... there are 12 months in the year but each one doesn't relate to any specific month). In no particular order as well.
So here goes me ..................
New Year Res. #1 ~ Reflect on the year gone by
Take on board all lessons learnt in 2011. Whether they were good or bad. As you will notice, running and sustaining a business is a continous and never ending learning curve. No one person knows it all.
New Year Res. #2 ~ Focus/refocus
Keep your eyes on the ball. Don't lose sight of 'why' you are in business in the first place! Try to tackle tasks one at a time. Multi-tasking atimes can actually slow you down and you end up wasting time instead.
New Year Res. #3 ~ Promote, promote, promote!!!
If you don't shout and keep as quiet as a mouse no one will certainly know your out there. So get your skates on, get out there and make your presence known. Advertise, build a website, have your business cards readily available. Just a few tips.
New Year Res. #4 ~ Network & engage
As they say, if you can't beat them, you might as well join them. Get on the social media bandwagon ~ facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dezine-Konnections-Interior-Design/159308770765370), twitter (https://twitter.com/#!/DezineKonnects), linkedIn (http://uk.linkedin.com/in/tolalaseinde). Also, don't forget to get out there & meet like-minded people face-to-face too. Attend networking groups, shows, exhibitions etc
New Year Res. #4 ~ Learn something new
Continous professional development and training is the very key. Being up to date with current trends, new legislation etc. It does no harm in learning something new each day. Gain new skillsets.
New Year Res. #5 ~ Keep on top of your TAX returns always!
Late returns attract automatic penalties as well as daily charges. Your business records need to be in order at all times. So get cracking. If you don't have the time or know how ~ outsource. Simple.
New Year Res. #6 ~ Be real about goal setting
In a nutshell you need to be practical when setting out your business goals. Far-fetched dreams are for hobbies. Business goals need to be SMART (Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant & timely).
New Year Res. #7 ~ Do a 'to-do' list. Daily.
This helps in keeping you focused and using your time more efficiently. Make sure that you don't go overboard and they are in manageable bites. I still use a 'filofax' (don't laugh) which to me isn't outdated as I like to keep a hard-copy personal organiser.
New Year Res. #8 ~ Blog all about you & your business
A very growing trend is blogging. Click on http://dezinekonnections.blogspot.com to visit mine and find out what I am passionate write about. Create an online newspaper ~ here's a link to mine http://paper.li/DezineKonnects/1325241452. Show off your 'other' valuable skills.
New Year Res. #9 ~ Measure your business regularly
I can not preach this enough. As it is the only way you can plan, monitor and forecast ahead. Use both quantitative and qualitative methods.
New Year Res. #10 ~ Delegate tasks where necessary
Everyone knows the saying ~ Jack of all trade, master of none! It's as simple as that. No matter how much time in the world you think you have, you still don't get everything done.
New Year Res. #11 ~ Drop what's not working for YOU ~ don't sweat it
If something isn't working for you and your business, quit while you are ahead. It makes absolute no business sense to keep on flogging a dead horse. Drop it and move on to something different and or new.
New Year Res. #12 ~ Don't forget to allow for 'me' time.
Last but certainly not the least, remember to take time out and be YOU!. Work-life balance. Down tools, unplug, detach, unwind, relax. You can call it what you want! If you don't you'll suffer burn-out which will be counter-productive to your business.
