Detola & Geek wins Theo Paphitis's Small Business Sunday award!

Some things are so rare that the chances of it happening is equal to one winning the lottery.

My one woman small handmade business won Theo Paphitis's small business Sunday award on 12th September 2016.

So you could imagine how amazed. elated, gobsmacked & speechless atimes I have been since Monday.

All kind of emotions happening at the same time!

At some point I could barely breathe.

Hard work really pays off. You've got to be in it to win it. I live by this mantra 100%.

You also have to be very passionate about what you do. I so love picking out colourful vibrant African wax print textiles. They are the backbone of my teeny weeny business that I call Detola & Geek.

Thanks again Mr Theo Paphitis, Shopkeeper & ex-Dragons Den judge for propelling my small business into the big world of business & super brands.

Will share my official award winning badge once I've received it.

....... and here it is, as promised

Keep your eye on Detola and Geek as it is certainly going places!

Handmade Lampshades Book: First freebie of the year!

Are you like me, you enter a giveaway, do all that is required to possibly win and then forget about it the next minute. This is one of those instances!

I did that last month, totally gave it no other thought!

An then ...... I won!!! I won a copy. So "fantabulous" !!! :-)

Happy coincidence that it arrived, a few days ago, on the day I was so bugged down with the dreaded "lurgy"! Urghhh.

When you run your own business, it is  a continuous learning process. And I love it. Gotta keep the "grey matter" ticking so to speak.

Thanks Needcraft, I can't wait to jump right into this book.

Keep your eyes peeled for some new designs y Detola and Geek coming out in 2016.

I make colourful African inspired lampshades, home dรฉcor & gifts. My designs are typically bold, geometric, retro & sometimes geeky too! I do work on custom orders using my fabrics or ones supplied by you to match your interiors.

Detola And Geek: Wrapping up 2015

So it is seriously countdown to the last few hours of the year 2015 in the UK where Detola & Geek is base.

And it has been an amazing year for Detola and Geek so far. Lots of lessons learnt, joining Instagram, connecting with other small businesses on social media platforms, learning new skills, teaching some lampshade making workshops to name a few.

Before the curtains fall on 2016, here are a few of my highlights I' like to share with you. Hard picking but I guess you will get the picture!

I found this app that allows you to share your nine most "hearted" images on Instagram. Quite awesome, so here is my pictorial view of my journey!

My bestseller by far this year, quite a popular design especially during the Christmas gifting season

Customer Reviews / feedback like this just makes everything worthwhile!

And finally seeing how the perfect pair Detola & Geek African table lampshades tie a room together. The icing on the cake, so to speak :-) (courtesy of Vickie F.)
I have a lot of plans / New Year resolutions for Detola & Geek which I have compartmentalize into manageable blocks. I will be unraveling / rolling them out one by one, steadily, over the months in the New Year.

But here's a snapshot (& in no particular order):

  • Finishing off my Detola & Geek brand logo design

  • Working on my Detola and Geek website

  • New designs involving mixed textures & designs

  • New product lines

  • Brick & Mortar Stockists

  • More Handmade & craft fairs

  • More posts on "this" blog! And maybe another spot as a "guest blogger"

  • As for the rest I have to keep my lips sealed for now! Sorry folks;-)

See you on the other side folks!

World Maths Day: Geometric inspired Lampshades by Detola and Geek

I bet you didn't know that World Maths Day event is celebrated between 12th - 14th October this year .  The World Education Games  (WEG) organises a live competition where participants can chose one out of 4 modes.

Let me quickly share a few maths facts  with you:

  1. Mathematics is derived from the Greek word 'mathema' which when translate means learning, study, science'
  2. 12,345,678,987,654,321 is the product of 111,111,111 x 111,111,111
  3. The name 'Google' came about after  the word 'googol' was spelt wrongly! And 'Googol' means a number 1 followed by 100 zeros.
  4. If you have a group of 23 people, atleast 2 people will hare the same birthday.
  5. A Palindrome number is a number that reads the same both forwards and backward like 12621.
I could really go on and on as am a "closet Geek" myself. LOL!!!!

Okay enough of the geeky stuff, here are some geometric inspired handmade lampshades by Detola and Geek all available to buy online (links are below).
