African Inspired Lampshades: Interior styling inspiration

"Collect things you love, that are authentic to you, and your house becomes your story." ~ Erin Flett ⁣ ⁣
Have you seen our latest designs yet. More and more colourful designs

Quite functional: They come in different shapes & sizes (custom orders welcome) and can be used as ceiling pendants or paired up with a lamp base (table & floor).

Adding colour: The colours, vibrancy & patterns will "funkify" any space and be a conversation starter too!

My handcrafted lampshades are my signature & best-selling products. They seem to be gaining quite a reputation, slowly becoming a movement (in my head).

I tend to seek out eye-catching African inspired design prints which may be bold, geometric, retro, tribal, botanical, mid-century modern or even  geeky too!

At the moment I’m obsessed with giving my lampshades alternative linings on the inside like metallic gold or bronze as well as making them transparent too.

I love commissions, special projects & collaborations, especially partnering with interior designers/stylists, property developers, home-stagers, architects etc. I also work with film set & stage designers.

Detola And Geek On the Road: Susie's Vintage & Handmade Pop Up Fair Feb 2016

A couple of Sundays ago, I attended my first handmade fair for 2016.

A totally new handmade fair for me, as well as venue, and I can't sing their praises enough. I am quite selective at which fairs I attend as some of them are not always cracked up to be all that (if you know what I mean)!

It was organised by Susie of Susie's Vintage Warehouse (which is based in Halls Green, Hertfordshire).

The venue itself - Nobel School, Stevenage - was just the right venue. Ample parking, very helpful & accommodating host, fab variety of stall holders & loads of footfall. It was also well publicised. Now that is how to pull off a "handmade & vintage fair"

An you will be please to know that I will be attending the next one. For all the details please click the link >>>>>>>>>>>>> Detola & Geek on Facebook

Detola and Geek is really looking forward to the next on in April. Can't wait.

If you can't make, no need to panic as you can always buy online :

This will be my first time selling, in person, at this Hertfordshire Pop Up Fair, hosted by Susie's Vintage Warehouse, so fingers crossed and all ;-). Really looking forward to it.

Detola and Geek lampshades are a lighting fantastic on Folksy

Yes I know this colour popping handmade lampshade of mine is quite bright & of the non-African print in naturel but it's warm. And I know it isn't Summer but it will inject colour into any room which needs some.

Not 1 but 3 of my "Detola and Geek" lamp shades got featured on Folksy's blog. If you haven't heard of them (mouth wide open), then you'd  better get on down there.

Folksy is an online marketplace that sells "Modern British Craft" on behalf of UK-based handmade designers and makers.

"A place to buy handmade gifts and crafts supplies and for British designers and  makers to sell their work" ~ Folksy

My candy striped retro lampshade made page 1. Yay!!!  You just need to scroll down ( to nearly the end) and 'oops there it is'

If you go onto page 2, there are 2 more of mine - African wax print inspired . Double Yay!!!

Day 3 Art Chain Challenge: Red & Green African Print Chevron handmade Lampshade & Cushion

This was a rare vintage ‪ African print design. The pattern was so popular that I had to join two pieces of fabric together in making this lampshade.

A customer wanted one to match the cushion she was about to order online via my Etsy Shop. I checked with her first to see if she was happy with me using 2 separate fabric pieces to make her 35cm drum lamp shade. She said YES!!!

Talk about precision aligning & invisible meeting line of two pieces of fabric. Phew! No pressure. At all. LOL.

Here's the feedback I received "Lovely! Well-made items. Easy to communicate with. Thanks so much! :-)

I then went on to nominate the lovely Ceridwen of Ceridwen Hazelchild Design who is one awesome Illustrator! to share for 5 days 1 creation per day & nominate a different person each time. Off you go girl.

Here are my deets if you need a lampshade or any other home decor product:

Day 2 Art Chain‬ challenge: Bull's Eye African Print Cushion

Day 2 of The ‪#‎ArtChain‬ challenge:
Culled from my Detola and Geek's Facebook page .....
Here is the first cushion I made which I call the Bulls Eye Circles African print fabric cushion.

Shortly after starting my lampshade making journey, I got a message from a potential Etsy customer asking if I made cushions. The fabric they wanted was the Bull's Eye African Print one. I was like yikes - I've never ever used a sewing machine before in my life. After calming myself down I started phoning around, frantically, to see if any of
my friends could borrow me their sewing machine as well as give me a crash course in 'Sewing 101'. I found one nearly immediately & I replied the customer letting them know that I DO make cushions as well. That was my introduction to the world of sewing. Two borrowed sewing machines later, am the proud owner of a Janome 7025
smile emoticon
I nominate my very talented friend Lee of 'By Candlelight 27' to share for 5 days 1 creation per day & nominate a different person each time. Off you go girl ......
